Forest Park Cemetery

It seems that taking the wrong turn or missing a turn is often good when you have a camera in your hand. Both happened a couple of days ago and both were profitable image wise.

On the second one I realized that we were approaching a large cemetery on Lawndale, Forest Park. I have only been there once to locate the gravesites of Janet's grandmother and great grandmother. Decided to stop in to see if it had any photographic possibilities--it does.

I get in trouble when I say that I have difficulty finding poignancy in rich peoples cemeteries--they don't have as much interest to me as some vandalized country cemetery with faded plastic flowers, homemade and funeral home markers--even concrete blocks for markers. Sure the memorials are pretty and sometimes even specular but they strike me as plant'em and forget'ems. Let my money show how much I cared, now letting perpetual care cut the grass into perpetuity is what I paid for. I plan on ending up in neither--dust unto dust is my preferred route.

Into this Universe, and why not knowing,
Nor whence, like Water willy-nilly flowing:
And out of it, as Wind along the Waste,
I know not whither, willy-nilly blowing.

Everyone is familiar with the Hill angel (Angel of Grief) at Glenwood. Well a short drive through Forest Park produced two smaller copies. Only photographed one because the light on the second didn't cut it I plan on going back in early morning or late afternoon for better light. Just a few years ago there were only four copies of the Angel of Grief in all of Texas. Now there are two at Glenwood and at least two at Forest Park Lawndale.

  2. Thank you Jan. This is actually one of two large urns that flank the walkway up to the mausoleum. On a whole, Forest Park is probably more photogenic than Glenwood. Some of the memorials at Glenwood are more opulent but Forest Park is no slouch. I look forward to getting back there to do some photographs.

  3. I'm not sure I've ever been to Forest Park. I'll look forward to seeing more when you return - maybe in the Fall when the leaves turn??
