Shooting Dutch at a German Festival

Janet and I got up early to go to the German Festival at Tomball. Had a good trip but it was cold so we did not stay at the festival for long. I did shoot one German but he was in the shadows so I considered it a miss and then moved on to shooting Dutch

I marveled that they could keep the wooden shoes on and do a dance that was every bit as lively as a polka. I didn't get any descent photographs but I clicked the shutter.

  1. A German Festival - that sounds like fun. The larger image (shoes) has some interesting elements to it. The backlighting with the shadows in front of the shoes is nice, as is the diagonal that was created by both pairs of feet, moving from left (bottom) to right (top). At least that's the way my eyes see it.

I like the crop on the one with the child. The only thing you see of the adult is the feet and hand and you can assume it is his mom. However, he is the point of interest in the photo so I think it is not necessary to see any more of his mom. In fact, she might be a distraction to your subject if you had cropped so the viewer could see more of her. Thanks for posting!

  2. It could have been fun if we could have stayed longer and it had warmed up. I forgot to take coats. I was wearing a thin short sleeved shirt and Janet is extremely cold natured anyway so we were not very comfortable. I was enjoying shooting the Dutch dance group but these are the only two photos that I would show anyone. I wanted to capture some blur and that I did but none of the shots had any coherent composition or captured interesting action. The young boy was one of the dancers and was fun to watch. At one point his mother swung him around and the shoes went flying but they flew out of the frame and the blur prevented seeing anything that you could tell what was happening.
