Houston's City Christmas Tree

Every year I swear that I am going to take photographs of the Christmas tree at City Hall for next year's Christmas Cards. I never do. I haven't made Christmas cards in the last several years but I did go down tonight and have fun with the Christmas tree. I didn't feel like messing with the tripod so I had to figure a way that having shaky photographs would be acceptable. These are two of my favorite. I am posting five or six to Flickr.

Since I wasn't sure that the dark black background would be appropriate for a Christmas card regardless of how festive the lights appeared, I did try a couple of manipulations to brighten the background, one a blue and one a very warm orange.

  1. Gary, I really, really like the tree with all the tall buildings. You definitely have this night shooting down. Great job!!!

  2. Jan, thank you. What surprised me about the shot with the buildings is that it is not converted or desaturated. Now I did pump up the color on the tree itself, which is the only manipulation I did on the image. The out of camera had the gray sky and buildings. If you look closely there are hints of color in some of the lights but I did no desaturation.
