A Trip: Throckmorton, Texas and Fort Griffin

We arrived in Throckmorton just as their Home Coming Parade was wrapping up. We were stopped at the edge of town and requested to pull over and park. I got out to stretch my legs and saw this SUV totally covered in mud—thought that said country enough to warrant a photograph.

Arriving in Throckmorton I noticed this wall of old Texas/Western movie posters. Another photo opportunity.

From Throckmorton we headed to Fort Griffin. The first turn off lead to a herd of longhorns.

The second was toward the visitors center where we discovered that they were holding a reenactment. Unfortunately just as we arrived it began to rain lightly. I managed to walk around, talk with many of the reenactors and take a few photographs. I should have done many more.

After nearly being run over by a stagecoach I noticed a group of musicians, one of whom was playing an unusual instrument—the jawbone of an ass. I waited until they finished the piece and asked the gentlemen what the instrument was called. Duh, it was called a jawbone. His wife, who played the bass, explained that the instrument was mentioned in the Old Testement.

At a distance I noticed what appeared to be a Prussian Army Helmet so I had to go ask how a Prussian soldier fit into the 1860’s in Texas. The gentleman wearing the uniform explained that this was actually a helmet that was used by the U S Army although it has not been well published.
